Goal Writing Examples

Goal:By (date) Student will be able to.....?/? attempts or % accuracy, ?/? trials as measured by the Adapted PE teachers

When writing objectives, the objective dates should align with the same dates report cards are given out. The amount of objectives will depend if your student is on a quarterly or trimester reporting system (semesters would fall under quarterly since progress reports are sent home half-way through semester. For example, if a student is on a quarterly grade system you wold have the Goal plus 3 examples (see example below)

CA Kindergarten PE Standard: 1.1 Travel within a large group, without bumping into others or falling, while using
locomotor skills.
Baseline: Student can currently walk without bumping into others in a group of 6-12 peers within the designated areof a full basketball court, . (less opportunity for student to bump into others since there is more open space i.e. full court vs half court)
Goal: By 6/12/2015 student will be able Travel within a large group (6-12 students) within the designated area of a half-basketball court, without bumping into others  while completing the locomotor skills of walking and jogging, 3/4 attempts, 3/4 trials, unassisted as measured by the Adapted Physical Education teacher
Objective 1: By (the first reporting period date) Student will be able to travel within a small group (3-5 students) within the designated area of a half-basketball court, without bumping into others while completing the locomotor skills of walking and jogging, 3/4 attempts, 3/4 trials, assisted as need be, as measured by the APE teacher.
Objective 2: By (the 2nd reporting period date) Student will be able to travel within a small group (3-5 students) within the designated area of a half-basketball court, without bumping into others while completing the locomotor skills of walking and jogging, 3/4 attempts, 3/4 trials, unassisted as measured by the APE teacher.-Jennette Diamond author
Objective 3: By (the 3rd reporting period date) Student will be able to travel within a large group of 6-12 peers within the designated area of a half-basketball court, without bumping into others while completing the locomotor skills of walking and jogging, 2/4 attempts, 2/4 trials, assisted as need be, as measured by the APE teacher.-Jennette Diamond author

DISCUSSION: There are many ways you can make this goal more detailed or less detailed. Instead of 2/4 attempts your could write with 50% accuracy. One could also make this goal a "timed" goal, for example, the baseline would state that the student can travel within a full-basketball court in a large group using the locomotor skill of walking, however student bumps into other students 5X per 30 seconds when unassisted. I like to use basketball court in many of my goals since the parameters are always consistent, and every school has at least a few courts, regardless of primary or secondary school.
